On the seafront two blocks north of Plaza Catedral along C 6 the Palacio Presidencial , originally built in 1673, was home to successive colonial and Colombian governors before being rebuilt in grandiose neo-Moorish style in 1922 under the orders of President Belisario Porras. It is commonly known as the "Palacio de las Garzas" due to the white Darien herons that were introduced by Porras and have lived free around the patio fountain ever since. Rumour has it that when US president Jimmy Carter visited the palace before the signing the new canal treaty his security team sprayed the building with a disinfectant that proved fatal to herons, and replacements had to be rushed in under cover of darkness. The streets around the palace are busy with presidential guards, who may let you in for a glimpse of the interior, or at least close enough to photograph the exterior.
