For centuries the centre of the city's social and political life, and still home to the presidential palace, the colonial city centre of San Felipe was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and is gradually being restored to its former glory after decades of neglect. Despite the upmarket restaurants and cafes which are beginning to open up, however, San Felipe is still a poor, run-down neighbourhood with a relaxed but slightly seedy streetlife - and though the ongoing restoration is making it a much more pleasant place to visit, the renovations are not popular with the district's poorer residents, many of whom face eviction. It is dangerous to walk the streets at night, and even during the day you should be careful when out of sight of the tourist police. The best way to see San Felipe is on foot, and Plaza Catedral , the main square, is a good place to start - you can reach it from the rest of the city by taxi or by walking down Av Central from Parque Santa Ana.
