Panama City isn't renowned for its love of high culture, but there are a couple of good theatres featuring national and international productions - check the Panama News for listings. The Teatro Balboa, Stephens Circle, Balboa (tel 262 5472) hosts jazz, folkloric dancing and theatre sponsored by the National Cultural Institute, while the splendid Neoclassical Teatro Nacional, Av B, Plaza Bolivar (tel 262 3525), has theatre and ballet performances. Cinema is far more popular, and there are many places where you can see the latest Hollywood blockbusters, in English with subtitles - La Prensa lists current screenings. The Cine Universitario (tel 264 2737) shows an eclectic range of films with the emphasis on the arty and obscure. Panamanians of all social classes love to gamble , and as well as the ever-present lottery ticket sellers there are several tax-free casinos , all located in the major hotels: try the El Panama, Granada or Soloy . Cockfighting , a bloody but immensely popular spectacle throughout the country, can be seen at the Club Gallistico (Mon, Sat & Sun; tel 221 5652; US$1) on the corner of Via Espana and Via Cincuentenario. Horse-racing meetings are held three times a week at the Hippodrome Presidente Ramon, out in the eastern suburbs.
