Guasaule and The Border With Honduras
Most travellers experience GUASAULE from the safe capsule of the Ticabus, which whizzes you painlessly through this cumbersome border post . If you're travelling by local transport, note that the border tends to close before noon for lunch and open whenever the officials have had their fill, usually at 2pm. Take a few dollars: the exit tax is currently US$2, and it must be paid in US currency. It's about 1km between the Nicaraguan border post and the Honduran side, and you'll have to walk it unless some kind truck driver takes pity on you, as there are no colectivos. If you're entering Nicaragua from Honduras the entry fee is US$5, plus a US$2 "processing fee" - the combined fee is only payable in US dollars. From the border a service departs for Chinandega - the nearest Nicaraguan town with acceptable accommodation - every thirty minutes or so. At Chinandega you can pick up an express bus on to Managua about every 30 minutes, or continue by bus to Leon.
