A short distance north of Pochomil is the number-one - possibly the only - resort in Nicaragua, Montelimar (tel 269-6752 or 269-6769, www.barcelo.co.cr ). Once the beach house of the dictator Somoza, it was turned into a resort by the Sandinistas and is now run by a Spanish company, though like many other properties nationalized during the Revolution, it's currently subject to an involved property dispute with Somoza's relations. Nicaragua's only five-star hotel, Montelimar has a relaxed atmosphere with a lovely private beach, four restaurants, four swimming pools, a small zoo and casino, and planned activities such as dance classes, horse-riding, tennis, windsurfing and volleyball. Most people come on a package, but you can book once you've arrived in Nicaragua. A so-called "all-inclusive" resort, prices are between US$110 and US$150 for a double room, including all meals, drinks and snacks; day rates of US$45 are also available.
