South of the capital, the pine-clad mountain ranges drop down through rolling green pasture lands to the arid heat of the Pacific coastal plains. A world away from the clear air and gentle climate of the highlands, this region nonetheless has its own particular, stark beauty, defined by dazzling light and ferocious temperatures. Traditionally this is a poor region, and in recent years many of the campesinos and cattle ranchers who struggled to eke a living here have moved north to swell the barrios of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

Tourists are scarce hereabouts, since there are relatively few attractions to make the journey worthwhile. For a change of pace from the capital, however, the shrimping town of San Lorenzo and the colonial city of Choluteca both make convenient stopovers on the longer route to Nicaragua, and with time to spare, the island of Isla El

Tigre in the Golfo de Fonseca is a perfect, deserted getaway.

The main transport junction in this part of the country is at the village of Jicaro Galan , at the intersection of Highway CA-5 and the Carretera Interamericana, some 100km south of Tegucigalpa. Buses heading in all directions stop here to exchange passengers before continuing west to the border with El Salvador at El Amatillo , 42km away, or east across the coastal plain to Nicaragua .
