Twenty kilometres east of Juticalpa, El Boqueron is one of the last remnants of dry tropical forest in Honduras, and home to a wide variety of wildlife including over 180 species of bird - quetzals, toucans and taragones have all been spotted here. It's easily accessible as a day-trip from the city, though there are facilities should you want to camp. To see the forest properly, you need to follow the moderately strenuous track through the reserve, which cuts through a small patch of cloudforest. Any of the buses running along the highway between Juticalpa and Catacamas will drop you at the marked entrance to the reserve, a journey of about twenty minutes. From here, the reserve stretches back along the Canyon de Boqueron , a kilometre-deep natural rift. The path takes you through forest and into the canyon along the left-hand bank of the Rio Olancho , where there are plentiful opportunities for swimming. After around an hour, the path crosses the river and heads uphill away from the canyon through open pastureland to the hamlet of LA AVISPA ; getting here takes about three hours in total. Beyond the village, the path loops steeply uphill around Cerro Agua Buena (1433m) and through the cloudforest section; here you've the greatest chance of seeing elusive bird and animal life, since the trees are stunted and the vegetation less dense than in other reserves. From this point on it's all downhill, the path emerging after a couple of hours on the highway at Tempisque, a few kilometres west of the main entrance. An early start would allow you to complete the walk in one day; alternatively, use the designated camping spots at the main entrance and at La Avispa - bring food and water. It's an easy matter to flag down buses to Juticalpa or Catacamas along the highway.
