Planning A Trip To Mosquitia
A number of companies, based in San Pedro, La Ceiba, Tegucigalpa and Trujillo (see the relevant sections for details), offer a variety of tours to Mosquitia. The advantages of an organized tour are that all the planning is done for you and you can count on being accompanied by knowledgeable guides. Travelling independently is by no means impossible, though, so long as you're prepared to go with the flow. Transport to and within the area is mainly by air or river: the main centres of Puerto Lempira, Palacios, Brus Laguna and Ahuas are connected to La Ceiba by regular flights, while launches ply the waterways connecting the scattered villages. Accommodation and facilities are basic; if you're making an independent trek, bring enough food with you for your party and guides. Finally, bear in mind that all schedules are subject to change and delay; transport on the rivers and channels, in particular, is determined by how much rain has fallen. Air fares to the Mosquitia are standardized. From La Ceiba, a return ticket to Palacios costs US$72, to Puerto Lempira US$106, and to Brus Laguna US$96. Once in the Mosquitia, boat fares are relatively high, reflecting the need to import all fuel. Hiring a boat to get from the coast to Las Marias will cost at least US$100, even after bargaining hard, and not including food for the guides.
