Not for nothing does La Ceiba have a reputation as the place to party. The Zona Viva hums most nights of the week, though weekends are really explosive, with a profusion of places to drink and get down. A hedonistic local crowd, plus a steady trickle of tourists and a growing number of resident expats, both in front of and behind the bar, have helped to create a buoyant atmosphere. There's a cinema just east of the Parque Central on 8 C, and two screens at the Cines Milenium in the Megaplaza south of town (you'll need a taxi) for the usual subtitled Hollywood fare. If you can make it, the most exciting time to be in La Ceiba is during Carnaval , a week-long bash held every May to celebrate the city's patron saint, San Isidro. Dances and street events in various barrios around town culminate in an afternoon parade on the third Saturday of the month. Led by a float carrying the Carnaval Queen, the parade moves slowly down the gaudily bedecked Av San Isidro. Bands on stages placed along the avenida then compete to outplay each other throughout the evening and into the early hours. The 200,000 or so partygoers who attend Carnaval every year flock between the stages and the clubs on 1 C, where the dancing continues until dawn.
