Beaches: Playa De Peru and Sambo Creek
Ten kilometres east of the city, Playa de Peru is a wide sweep of clean sand that's popular at weekends. Any bus running east up the coast will drop you at the turn-off on the highway, from where it's a fifteen-minute walk to the beach. About 2km past the turning for Playa de Peru, on the Rio Maria, there's a series of waterfalls and natural pools set in lush, shady forest. A path leads from Rio Maria village on the highway, winding through the hills along the left bank of the river: it takes around thirty minutes to walk to the first cascade and pool, with some muddy sections and a bit of scrambling during the wet season. There are further deserted expanses of white sand at the friendly Garifuna village of SAMBO CREEK , 8km beyond Rio Maria. You can eat excellent fresh fish at a couple of good restaurants in the village, and there are cheap beds at the basic Hotel Hermanos Avila (up to US$5) or more comfortable Hotel La Canadien (tel 440 2099, fax 440 2097; US$15-25), a new hotel with pleasant rooms, a great beachside plot and a pool. Olanchito or Jutiapa buses from La Ceiba will drop you at the turn-off to Sambo Creek on the highway, a couple of kilometres from the village; slower buses run all the way to the village centre from La Ceiba's terminal every 45 minutes.
