Practicalities
All buses arrive at a terminal just off the highway, about 2km northwest of the centre, at the bottom of the hill. There are six services a day to Ocotepeque for El Salvador and Guatemala, and a constant stream north to San Pedro Sula via La Entrada, and the Copan turn-off. From the terminal it's a stiff twenty-minute walk into town, or US$0.50 per person in a colectivo taxi. Hondutel and the post office are on the western edge of the Parque, with Banco Atlantida to the south. You can surf the Internet at either Pizza Pizza or Computec, 2 Av, two blocks southeast of the Parque - both charge about US$4 per hour. The Casa de Cultura , two blocks south of the Parque, has some fairly limited information about the area, but you're better off talking to Warren Post, the helpful owner of Pizza Pizza , who knows the region well. If you want to really explore the western highlands, Lenca Land Trails, based in the Hotel Elvir , offer a number of excellent trips to national parks including Celaque, indigenous villages and hot springs. There's also a good community Web site ( http://sites.netscape.net/srcopan ) devoted to the town. Santa Rosa has a moderate range of places to stay . By far the nicest place in town is the Hotel Elvir on C Centenario at 2 Av SO (tel 662 0103, lenca@hondutel.hn ; US$25-40), which has large, colonial-style rooms, all with bath and TV, and a good restaurant and cafe. The Hotel Continental , at 2 C NO, 2-3 Av NO (tel 662 0801; US$10-15), is slightly cheaper, while the Hotel Copan at 1 C NE, 3 Av NE (tel 662 0265; US$5-10) and Hotel Rosario at 3 Av NE (tel 662 0211; US$5-10) are two good budget bets. The Hotel Grand Mayaland (tel 662 0233; US$15-25), opposite the bus terminal, offers modern, impersonal rooms, but is convenient for transport. Santa Rosa's small number of eating and drinking places is increasing with the growing number of tourists. One of the newer outfits is the French-owned Paris Restaurant and Bar on C Centenario, two blocks west of the Parque, whose excellent - but fairly pricey - menu changes daily. Both the courtyard dining area and wooden bar are also good for a quiet drink. One block south is Chiky's Antijitos Mexicanos , 1 C SO at 1 Av SO, serving inexpensive burgers, tacos and Honduran food in a relaxed atmosphere. Three blocks away, to the east of the Parque Central, Restaurant Well , 2 C SE, 2-3 Av SE, is a friendly place serving large portions of authentic Chinese food at reasonable prices; a couple of blocks further on, the US-owned Pizza Pizza , C Centenario, 5-6 Av NE, cooks up good pizza and pasta. Finally, there's always something tasty available in the pleasant cafe and restaurant inside the Hotel Elvir .
