The Border: El Salvador and Guatemala
Buses run 10km south to the El Salvadorean border at El Poy regularly until late afternoon. El Poy itself is a drab, dusty little place but the crossing is straightforward; it is as well to cross as early in the day as possible, since public transport onwards within El Salvador is infrequent, and stops altogether mid-afternoon. There are no banks, but a profusion of moneychangers - change enough to keep you going until you reach San Salvador. There's no fee to enter El Salvador. El Poy has no accommodation , but there are basic hotel facilities in El Salvador at the village of Citala, 1km away, and more upmarket places at San Ignacio, 5km from the border, and La Palma, the nearest town, 11km south of the border. Buses to La Palma and on to San Salvador leave every thirty minutes until 4.30pm. Some 18km west of town is the Guatemal an border crossing of Agua Caliente (open 6am-6pm). Buses make the thirty-minute trip to the border every half hour or so until 4pm. There are six daily buses from the border, running every two hours between 7.30am and 3.30pm direct to San Pedro Sula (6hr); alternatively, take the first bus to Nuevo Ocotepeque and change buses there. There are no banking or accommodation facilities on the Honduran side. Over in Guatemala, minibuses leave every twenty minutes for Esquipulas until 6pm.
