The Western Shore
The towering peak of the Cerro Santa Barbara (2740m) forms a superb backdrop to the waters of the western shore of the lake, which is far less developed and accessible than the eastern. The peak is encircled by the dense, green cover of the Parque Nacional Santa Barbara , consisting of virgin cloudforest, plus thick stretches of pine and mixed broadleaf forest on the lower slopes. The reserve is as yet relatively undeveloped for tourism and there are no facilities, though guides can by found by asking in the lakeside hotels. Nestling at the base of the reserve, by the water's edge, is the archeological site of Los Naranjos , once an extensive Maya settlement, though at present there's little to see other than earth-covered mounds. Taking the junction to the left at Pito Solo brings you onto Highway CA-20, heading west along the lower fringes of the park. Fifty-three kilometres along this road is Santa Barbara , a friendly town situated amid coffee plantations. Buses run to the central plaza and there are a couple of decent hotels in the surrounding blocks.
