North To The Catarata De Pulhapanzak
North of Pena Blanca is one of the highlights of the lake region, the Catarata de Pulhapanzak (daily 8am-6pm; US$0.75; plus US$0.40 per person for camping), a stunning, 43-metre-high cascade of churning white waters on the Rio Lindo. Claimed to be the prettiest waterfall in the country, the cascade is at its most dazzling in the early mornings, when rainbows form in the rising sun. A narrow trail on the right-hand side - very steep and wet - descends past several viewpoints to the riverbank at the bottom of the falls. The area immediately around the falls has been designated a public park, with comedores and a swimming spot. Right by the entrance, a grassy expanse is identified as the "ceremonial plaza" of a centre of Lenca culture believed to have been sited here, although no excavation has been carried out. Pulhapanzak is an easy fifteen-minute walk from the village of San Buenaventura , 8km north of Pena Blanca; buses ply the dirt road between the two every hour.
