Breaking the journey in La Entrada does give you a chance to visit the archeological site of El Puente (daily 8am-4pm; US$5); a signed turn on the CA-11 4km before La Entrada gives access to the site, 6km away. Opened in 1994, El Puente gets few visitors, which makes its location - amid the grassy fields flanking the Rio Chinamito - all the more enjoyable, although after the glories of Copan, the scale of the site is inevitably disappointing. Once a sizeable Maya settlement, dating back to the Late Classic period and under the authority of Copan, El Puente contains more than two hundred structures. To date, only a small number have been excavated, including religious buildings and structures for the use of the elite, built around what was the main plaza. The most important of these (Structure 1) is an eleven-metre-high, six-stepped pyramid, oriented east-west and thought to be a funerary temple; the long pyramid along its lower edge contains burial chambers. The small museum at the entrance to the park, about 1km from the restorations, has an informative exhibition on the site itself and on Maya culture in general. There's no public transport to the site, but hitching is considered safe; traffic is more frequent in the mornings. A round-trip taxi fare from La Entrada will cost around US$10, including an hour at the ruins
