Comayagua Practicalities

Practicalities

Highway CA-5 from Tegucigalpa passes 1.5km southwest of the centre, to which it's connected by the broad road known as "the Boulevard". Buses between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula drop passengers off on the highway at the top of the Boulevard, a US$0.50 taxi ride or twenty-minute walk from the Parque Central. Transportes Catrachos also run hourly buses to and from Tegucigalpa from a terminal five blocks south of the Parque. There are several banks on or just off the Parque Central, including Banco Atlantida and Bancahsa. Hondutel and the post office are alongside each other on the street behind the cathedral. An extensive general market runs along 1 Av NO, 2-3 C NO, starting three blocks south of the cathedral.

Unfortunately for the visitor, the range of places to stay in Comayagua is quite narrow. Of the small number of hotels in and around the market area, the Hotel America Inc , 1 Av NO at 1 C NO (tel 772 0360; US$10-15), has rather spartan but clean rooms, all with bath and a/c. Hotel Emperador , on C Central at the Boulevard (tel 772 0332; US$5-10), is of a similar standard, while the Hotel Norymax Colonial , at the other end of C Central, in front of the school (tel 772 1703; US$10-15), is perhaps the nicest in this part of town, with clean comfortable rooms and flower-filled balconies. At the northern end of town, just off the Boulevard, Hotel Quan (tel 772 0070, hquan@hondutel.hn ) is a good alternative base, with a choice of either modern motel-style accommodation (US$15-25) or less pleasant but cheap budget rooms (US$5-10), some with private bath.

For eating , Restaurante Palmeras , at 4 C NO on the Parque Central, serves substantial breakfasts, daily

lunches and low-priced snacks in a pleasant setting. One block down, Fruit y Tacos does excellent licuados , plus burgers and tacos, though the service can be a little downbeat. But by far the best place in town is the Villa Real , a block southeast of the plaza, a very stylish restaurant set in a beautifully restored colonial town house. There's an extensive menu, including pasta (US$4) and grilled meats and fish dishes (US$6-7), plus a gorgeous, well-stocked little bar.
