Utila Cayes - eleven tiny outcrops strung along the southwestern edge of the island - were designated a wildlife refuge in 1992. Suc Suc (or Jewel) Caye and Pigeon Caye , connected by a narrow causeway, are both inhabited, and the pace of life here is even slower than that on Utila. Small launches regularly shuttle between Suc Suc and Utila (US$1), or can be rented to take you across for a day's snorkelling, if you have your own equipment. Vicky's Rooms on Suc Suc (up to US$5) offers basic accommodation , and there are a couple of reasonable restaurants and a good fish market. Water Caye , a blissful stretch of white sand, coconut palms, pellucid water and a small coral reef, is even more idyllic given its absence of sandflies. Camping is allowed (bring all your food, equipment for a campfire and water), and a caretaker turns up every day to collect the US$1 fee for use of the island (hammocks can be rented for an extra US$1). Water Caye is also the ultimate desert-island venue for occasional full-moon parties and a spectacular annual two-day July rave, with European house and techno DJs, organized by Sunjam and the Mango Inn (see www.sunjam.com for information). Transport to the caye is organized during such events; at other times, dive boats will often drop you off on their way to the north coast for a small fee, or you can ask the owner of the Bundu Cafe .
