Eating
Lobster and fish are obviously staples on the islands, along with the usual rice, beans and chicken. With the tourists, however, have also come European and American foods - pasta, pizza, burgers, pancakes and granola. Since most things have to be brought in by boat, prices are higher than on the mainland: main courses start at around US$4, and beers cost at least US$1. For eating on the cheap, head for the evening stalls on the road by the dock, which do a thriving trade in baleadas . Note that many restaurants stop serving at around 10pm. Bundu Cafe , on the main street, east of the dock. Serves European-style breakfasts and lunches and lassi-style milkshakes. Also has a book exchange. Captain Jack's , five minutes' walk west of the dock. Dutch-Utilan owned cafe-restaurant serving excellent-value lunches, including burritos and sandwiches, freshly squeezed orange juice, and delicious dinners such as fish cakes and grilled kingfish steaks. Cross Creek , at the Point. Superb Caribbean cooking from one of Utila's best chefs, served in a quiet spot beside the lagoon and majoring in flavoursome pan-fried fish and seafood. It's fairly expensive though: expect to pay around $10 a head for a meal plus drink. Delaney's Island Kitchen , three minutes east of the dock. Simple, well-executed island cooking, plus a few Western dishes like pasta. Golden Rose , two minutes west of the dock. Good-value Caribbean and Honduran dishes, popular with dive instructors and locals. Jade Seahorse , on Cola de Mico Road. Serves great breakfasts and licuados , and good seafood. Mango Cafe , in the Mango Inn . A popular place with an interesting selection of tasty and well- presented European food, espresso and cappuccino, and a lively bar. Closed Mon. Mermaid's Corner , at Rubi's Inn . Popular pasta and pizza restaurant with a great atmosphere, though service can be very slow. RJs , at The Point, beside the bridge. Popular with dive crews and students, with a gregarious atmosphere and famously excellent meat and fish barbecues. Thompson's Bakery , Cola de Mico Road. A near-legendary place to hang out, read, drink coffee and meet other travellers while sampling the good-value breakfasts or the range of daily baked goods - try the johnny cakes.
