Smallest of the three main Bay Islands, UTILA is a key destination for budget travellers, and one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to learn to dive - and even if you don't want to don tanks, the superb waters around the island offer great swimming and snorkelling possibilities. Utila is still the cheapest of the Bay Islands, with a cost of living only slightly higher than that on the mainland, although prices are gradually rising. Life is laid-back and people are generally friendly; crimes against tourists are very rare, though watch out for the periodic dancehall brawl. As elsewhere, respect local customs in dress and don't walk around in your bathing suit. Note also that drinking from glass bottles on the street is prohibited.
