Arrival and Getting Around
Regular flights from La Ceiba and occasionally further afield land at the airport , on the road to French Harbour, 3km from Coxen Hole - the main town on the south side of the island. A taxi to West End from here costs $10, or you could walk to the road and wait for one of the public minibuses which head to Coxen Hole every 20 minutes or so (US$0.70) and change there. There are an information desk, a hotel reservation desk, car rental agencies and a bank at the airport. The ferry dock is in the centre of Coxen Hole. A paved road runs west-east along the island, connecting the major communities. Minibuses leave regularly from Main Street in Coxen Hole, heading west to Sandy Bay and West End (every 20min until late afternoon) and east to Brick Bay, French Harbour, Oak Ridge and Punta Gorda (every 30min or so until late afternoon); fares are US$0.70-1. However, if you really want to explore, you'll need to rent a car or motorbike : in addition to the agencies at the airport, Sandy Bay Rent-a-Car (tel 445 1710, fax 445 1711) has offices at Sandy Bay and West End and rents out Jeeps for $45 per day, and motorbikes for $25 a day.
