Arrival and Information
Guanaja airstrip is on the larger section of the island, next to the canal. Aside from a couple of dirt tracks there are no roads, and the main form of transport is small launches. Boats from the main dock in Bonacca meet all flights and rides can be hitched on private boats to Mangrove Bight for a nominal fee. There are no scheduled boat services to Guanaja from the mainland, but regular cargo ships sail to the island from La Ceiba and other ports in Honduras. Virtually all the houses in Bonacca are built on stilts - vestiges of early settlement by the Cayman islanders - the buildings clinging to wooden causeways over the canals, many of which have now been filled in. The main causeway, running for about 500m east-west along the caye, with a maze of small passages branching off it, is where you'll find all the shops, banks and businesses. You can change dollars, travellers' cheques and get cash advances at Bancahsa, to the right of the dock (Mon-Fri 8-11.30am & 1.30-4pm, Sat 8-11.30am)
worth the trip!guanajamama says "Guanaja is amazing - - - beautiful reefs and beaches, lovely people. Be prepared for sandfleas or you'll be frustrated. Try 7% or 9% deet products (OFF or Cutters) - - that's all you need. Also note that the hike to the waterfall just became much more easy. A local hotel owner recently groomed the trail and although it's still a bit rough, it's much easier to follow. Don't miss the waterfall!"
