The easternmost Bay Island, GUANAJA was the most beautiful, densely forested and undeveloped of them all until Hurricane Mitch laid siege to it for over two days during October 1998, lashing the land with winds of up to 300kph. Though buildings have been patched up and reforestation projects have been implemented, the landscape will take decades to recover. Guanaja is some 25km long and up to four kilometres wide, and is divided into two unequal parts by a narrow canal - the only way to get between the two sections of the island is by water-taxi, which adds both to the atmosphere and to the cost of living. The island is very thinly populated - most of Guanaja's 12,000 inhabitants live in Bonacca (also know as Guanaja Town ), a crowded settlement that sits on a small caye a few hundred metres offshore. It's here that you'll find the island's shops, as well as the bulk of the reasonably priced accommodation. The only other settlements of any substance are Savannah Bight (on the east coast) and Mangrove Bight (on the north coast).
worth the trip!guanajamama says "Guanaja is amazing - - - beautiful reefs and beaches, lovely people. Be prepared for sandfleas or you'll be frustrated. Try 7% or 9% deet products (OFF or Cutters) - - that's all you need. Also note that the hike to the waterfall just became much more easy. A local hotel owner recently groomed the trail and although it's still a bit rough, it's much easier to follow. Don't miss the waterfall!"
