Arrival and Information
The plaza is the focal point for the community with the major shops, municipal buildings and police station around the square. The market and bus terminal are on 7 C nearby. The Bancafe bank , 2 Av 46, near the market (Mon-Fri 8.30am-4pm, Sat 9am-1pm), exchanges both cash and travellers' cheques; there's a new Internet cafe next door, with modern terminals, cheap rates and discounted international call facilities. Getting to Nebaj is straightforward with buses from Santa Cruz del Quiche every ninety minutes between 8.30am and 4pm (4hr), plus a daily service from Huehuetenango every morning (6hr); alternatively, take a bus to Sacapulas and change there. Leaving Nebaj is more problematic with the schedules being subject to frequent changes: departures for Quiche are usually in the early hours, and the Huehuetenango bus generally leaves at 5am. Check at the terminal for the latest information and arrive early to grab a seat. Pick-ups and trucks supplement the buses; the best place to hitch south is on the road out of town, a little further past the Hotel Ixil .
