Tourist Crime
While there is no need to be paranoid, visitors to the heavily touristed areas around Antigua and Lago de Atitlan should be aware that crime against tourists - including robbery and rape - is a problem. Pay close attention to security reports from your embassy and follow the usual precautions with extra care. In particular, avoid walking alone, especially at night or to isolated spots during the day. If you want to visit viewing spots like the cruce overlooking Antigua, inform the Tourist Police and they will accompany you or even give you a ride there on one of their Jeeps or motorbikes. Though there have been very few attacks on hikers in the Lago de Atitlan area recently, it's still safer to walk in a group. Similarly, don't amble around Panajachel alone late at night. In the more remote highlands, where foreigners are a much rarer sight, attacks are extremely uncommon.
