The main approach to both departments is from the Carretera al Atlantico, where the road to the Verapaz highlands branches off at the El Rancho junction. Beyond El Rancho this road climbs steadily into the hills, the dusty browns and dry yellows of the Motagua valley giving way to an explosion of greens as dense pine forests and alpine meadows begin to cover the mountains. Some 48km beyond the junction is La Cumbre de Santa Elena , where the road for the main towns of Baja Verapaz turns off to the west, descending into the Salama valley , surrounded by steep hillsides and seemingly cut off from the outside world.
