Accommodation, Eating and Drinking
There are three hotels at the ruins, all of them fairly expensive and not especially good value, though they offer discounts out of season. The largest and most luxurious is the Jungle Lodge (tel 476 8775, fax 476 0294, www.junglelodge.com ; US$15-60), which offers good bungalow accommodation with two double beds per bungalow, and some fairly comfortable "budget" rooms, though they lack private baths and are often booked up; there's also a restaurant and a pool. Next door is the overpriced Jaguar Inn (tel 926 0002, fax 926 2413, www.jaguartikal.com ; US$40-60), with nine bungalows with little verandas and camping (US$3.20 per person), but no pool. Close by, the Tikal Inn (tel 926 0065, fax 594 6944, tikalinn@internetdetelgua.com.gt ; US$25-40) is a better bet, with nice thatched bungalows, pleasant rooms and a glorious swimming pool. Alternatively, for US$4.80 you can camp or sling a hammock under one of the thatched shelters in a cleared space usedas a campsite. Hammocks and mosquito nets (essential in the wet season) can be rented either on the spot or from the Comedor Imperio Maya opposite the visitor centre. There's a shower block at the entrance to the campsite, but water is sporadic. It's illegal to camp or sleep out among the ruins. The three simple comedores at the entrance to the ruins, and a couple more inside, offer a limited menu of traditional Guatemalan specialities - eggs, beans, grilled meat and chicken. For more extensive and expensive menus, there's an adequate restaurant in the Jaguar Inn . It's essential to buy some water before setting out, though cold drinks are sold at a number of spots around the ruins.
