There are a number of possible routes into Mexico from Peten, all of which offer a sense of adventure, a glimpse of the rainforest and involve shuttling between buses, boats and immigration posts. Travellers should bear in mind, however, that at the time of writing, Mexican border officials were only issuing two-week visas to travellers entering the state of Chiapas from Guatemala, due to the armed conflict in the region. Getting to Belize is much more straightforward, with numerous daily buses connecting Flores with the border at Melchor de Mencos and good bus services onward on the Belizean side.
