Getting To The Peten
Many visitors arrive in Peten by bus or plane directly from Guatemala City. By air it's a short fifty-minute hop to Flores. A number of internal airlines fly the route daily and tickets can be bought from virtually any travel agent in the country; prices range between US$70 and US$120 depending on the airline. Demand is heavy and overbooking is common. By bus it can take anywhere between eight and ten hours. Numerous companies provide around twenty services a day from Guatemala City to Flores. If you don't want to do the 554-kilometre trip in one go, it's easy enough to do it in stages - the best places to break the journey are at Quirigua , Rio Dulce and Poptun . Coming from the Guatemalan highlands you can reach Peten along the backroads from Coban in Alta Verapaz, a long and adventurous route. From Belize or Mexico , you can enter the country through Peten. The most obvious route is from Belize through the border at Melchor de Mencos, but there are also two river routes that bring you through from Palenque or Tenosique in Mexico.
