If you have a few hours to spare, the most obvious excursion is a trip on the lake . Boatmen can take you around a circuit that takes in a mirador and small ruin on the peninsula opposite and the Petencito zoo , 3km east of Flores (daily 8am-5pm), with its small collection of sluggish local wildlife, pausing for a swim along the way (beware the concrete waterslide by the zoo - it's caused at least one death). Boatmen loiter with intent below the Hotel Santana in Flores, or around the start of the causeway. If you'd rather paddle around under your own steam you can rent a canoe for around US$2 an hour. Of the numerous caves in the hills behind Santa Elena, the most accessible is Aktun Kan (daily 8am-5pm; US$1.20) - simply follow the Flores causeway through Santa Elena, turn left when it forks in front of a small hill, and then take the first right. Otherwise known as La Cueva de la Serpiente , the cave is the legendary home of a huge snake; the guard may explain some of the bizarre names given to the various shapes inside.
