Practicalities
A bus from Flores passes through Tikal en route for Uaxactun at around 3.30pm; alternatively, you could take one of the tours run by a number of companies in Flores. Staying overnight you have two options: the EcoCampamento (tel 926 0077) has rooms (US$5-10), tents and hammocks (US$3 per person), protected by mosquito nets, under a thatched shelter; the welcoming Campamento Ecologico El Chiclero (tel 926 1033, fax 926 1095; US$5-10) offers clean rooms without bath, or you can camp or sling up a hammock for US$2.50 a head. Owner Antonio Baldizon also organizes 4WD trips to Rio Azul, and his wife Neria prepares excellent food. Uaxactun's guide association has a small information office at the end of the airstrip and will organize camping trips to any of the remote northern sites, into the jungle or east to Nakum and Yaxha. Equipment is carried on horseback and the price (US$30 per person per day for a group of three or more) includes a guide, horses, camping gear and food. Check at CINCAP or ProPeten in Flores for advice and help with putting together excursions, or contact Evolution Adventures.
