Way out west on the edge of the city is the long thin arm of Zona 7, which wraps around the ruins of Kaminaljuyu (daily 9am-4pm; US$4). Archeological digs on this side of the city have revealed a Maya city that once housed around fifty thousand people. More than three hundred mounds and thirteen ball courts have been discovered, though unlike the massive temples of the lowlands, these structures were built of adobe, and most of them have been lost to centuries of erosion and a few decades of urban sprawl. Today, the archeological site, incorporating only a tiny fraction of the original city, is little more than a series of earth-covered mounds, and though it's now a favourite spot for football and romance, it's virtually impossible to get any impression of Kaminaljuyu's former scale and splendour. To get to the ruins, take bus #35 from 4 Av in Zona 1. Alternatively, any bus from the Parque Central that has a small "Kaminaljuyu" sign in the windscreen passes within a block or two.
