South from Santa Ana, the three volcanic peaks of Cerro Verde, Santa Ana and Izalco together form a concise, living example of geological evolution. The oldest, Cerro Verde , is now a softened, densely vegetated mountain harbouring a national park. Santa Ana , nominally active, has cultivated lower slopes giving way to a bare, lava- covered summit, whilst juvenile Izalco , one of the youngest volcanoes in the world, is an almost perfect, bare lava cone of unsurpassed natural beauty.
