There's little to do in Apaneca itself, but it's an enjoyable and not too strenuous walk through woods and fincas to the Laguna Verde , a small crater lake 4km to the northeast of town. Fringed by reeds and surrounded by mist-clad pine slopes, the lake is a popular destination, and at the weekends you're likely to share the path with numerous families and groups of walkers. From the highway on the edge of town, follow the dirt road to the right of the Jardin de Flores garden centre, which winds up and round the mountain, passing several fincas and a couple of small hamlets, overlooked by the weekend retreats of wealthy San Salvadoreans. An enjoyable shortcut is to walk up the dried-up stream bed through the woods, which links the bends of the road; this is more of a scramble and it's quite easy to get lost - ask directions from anyone you meet. The hamlet just above the lake, reached after about ninety minutes, has sweeping views on clear days; the white city sheltering in the valley below is Ahuachapan, while to the north is the peak of Cerro Artilleria on the Guatemalan border. The grassy slopes around the lake make a good spot for a picnic and you can swim. Closer to town to the north, the smaller and less impressive Laguna Las Ninfas is an easy forest walk of about 45 minutes.
