Fifteen kilometres west of Ahuachapan is the quiet mountain village of TACUBA , reached via a winding and scenic road with grand views of coffee plantations and the mountains and national park of Bosque El Imposible. An important settlement existed here long before the Spaniards arrived, and the village retains strong folkloric traditions, although you'll only really notice these at fiesta time. There's not much to do in Tacuba itself, though it makes a fine base for exploring the nearby mountains and valleys. There are few places to stay other than private lodgings and the excellent new La Cabana de Tacuba (tel 417 4332; US$40-60), set amid beautifully cultivated gardens and offering a fine range of accommodation, including large double rooms and suites. The price includes three meals a day and the owner can supply information on nature trails and hiking in the area.
