Nightlife
The entire population of the city appears to disappear at nightfall, and even in the Zona Rosa, the action takes place inside, rather than on the street. Many of the restaurants have live salsa/merengue music and dancing at the weekends; two of the best are Villa Fiesta , Blvd de los Heroes opposite the Hospital Bloom, and Quinto Sol , 15a Av Nte and 1a C Pte, Col Centroamerica. La Luna , C Berlin 228, Col Centroamerica, and La Ventana , C San Antonio Abad 2335, are relaxed bars with a more European feel, popular with local professionals and foreigners. El Arpa , Avenida "A" 137, Col San Jose, is San Salvador's obligatory Irish pub, while Los Celtas , C San Antonio Abad at C Principal 2339, keeps the Scottish flag flying. In the Zona Rosa , Mario's and the Reggae Bar are both patronized by a lively crowd. Blvd del Hipodromo, around C la Reforma, has a number of loud, street-side bars which start getting full from around 10pm; many, including Zky and Senor Frog's , appeal to a younger, moneyed set. Sr Cactus , on C la Reforma, is more mellow, with a pleasant garden, attracting an older crowd. music and Euro-bop until late. There are a couple of cinemas in El Centro - including a huge Cinemark at Metrocentro and Galerias, and a multiscreen complex at Redondel Masferrer at the top of Paseo Escalon - and many others scattered around the city; the daily newspapers list programmes. La Luna (see above) shows a different film on video every weekday night, starting at around 7pm, while the Alianza Francaise (tel 223 8084) on 51a Av Nte 152 runs French film seasons.
