From Santa Tecla, a road heads north, up and around the heavily cultivated slopes of Volcan San Salvador , at 1960m the fifth-highest volcano in the country. Its summit is punctured by a 540m-deep crater, El Boqueron , which contains a smaller cone created in the last eruption in 1917. You can get to the top by public transport and then either walk around the crater (about 2hr) or down the wooded slopes inside it. Bus #103 (hourly) and pickups run from 4a Av Sur and C Hernandez in Santa Tecla to the top, with the last bus back down leaving in mid-afternoon. Bear in mind that taxi and pick-up drivers are reluctant to make the journey up to the crater in the afternoon, for fear of robbery - in any case, early morning is the best time to go, when the views from the summit are clearest. You can also walk up to the crater, though robberies are frequent; the police at the entrance may be willing to provide an escort for groups.
