Heading south from the hamlet of Corinto, a narrow, paved road clears the city surprisingly quickly and winds up to Los Planes de Renderos , a little-visited suburban area set in the hills around San Salvador. The air is much fresher here than in the city and the mirador lookout point affords superb views of San Salvador, the volcano and Lake Ilopango. Los Planes is also a famous for its numerous pupuserias , including the barn-like Pupuseria Paty which serves some of the best pupusas in El Salvador. Also worth a visit is Casa de Piedra , an open-fronted bar and restaurant with spectacular night-time views of San Salvador - it's at km 8.5 on the Carretera Los Planes de Renderos. Twelve kilometres from San Salvador is the Parque Balboa , a somewhat run-down turicentro (daily 8am-6pm; US$0.90), but still a pleasant getaway. About forty minutes' walk inside the park is the Puerta del Diablo , a split rock formation at the summit of the Cerro Chulo, with spectacular views to the coast and across to Volcan San Vicente volcano. Just before the entrance to Parque Balboa, a road branches off to wind down to the coast; a turning after about 2km leads to the small town of PANCHIMALCO , spectacularly set at the foot of the lush slopes of Cerro Chulo, with the Puerto del Diablo overlooking the town to the west. The area is inhabited by the Panchos, descendants of the Pipils, although traditional dress is rarely seen nowadays. The colonial church, built in 1725, is the oldest surviving church in the country, and there's a huge ceiba tree in the main square. Usually a sleepy, quiet place, things become livelier during the town's annual festivals .
