Los Cobanos, 25km due south of Sonsonate, is a favourite beach for Salvadorean holiday-makers, and somewhat crowded at the weekends. Although rather rocky, this pretty, gently curved beach makes a nice contrast to the palm-fringed expanses further down the coast. Walk round the headland at the west end of the small bay and you come to the quieter beach of Los Remedios . A couple of places have cabanas for rent: Solimar (US$5-10) is the nicest (although closed during the week), while the Mar y Plata (US$5-10), set slightly back from the seafront, is slightly run-down. A number of small shacks serve fresh fish and other meals. Bus #257 leaves Sonsonate every hour for Los Cobanos until early evening, and there are also occasional direct buses from San Salvador; the last bus leaves the beach at 5pm.
