The port town of LA UNION sits in a stunning location on a bay on the edge of the Golfo de Fonseca. Faded since its glory days as El Salvador's largest commercial port, La Union's streets of low white houses crumble a little further every day in the ferocious heat. Though the atmosphere around the town is not pleasant, La Union is the jumping-off point for the islands of the Golfo de Fonseca . The port of Cutuco is shortly to undergo a redevelopment plan that will turn it into the largest Pacific port in Central America. There are a few reasonable places to stay and eat in town, and the Honduran border crossing at El Amatillo is an easy journey away.
