Just 34km south of San Salvador, LA LIBERTAD (in full, Puerto La Libertad, but often reduced by bus conductors to simply "El Puerto"), once a major port and still an important fishing town, has - more by luck than judgement - re-invented itself as a tourist spot, neatly set between the beaches of the Costa del Balsamo in the west and the Costa del Sol in the east. It's a popular place, particularly crowded at the weekends, when the hordes from the capital pour in to eat, drink and relax by the sea. La Libertad also has El Salvador's highest concentration of gringos, including a year-round community of international surfing bums who spend their time hanging out and waiting for the right break.
