To the Honduran border

The highway runs past La Palma to the Honduran border at El Poy, 11km away, a thirty-minute journey by bus. The village of SAN IGNACIO , 6km from La Palma, also has a few craft workshops and two places to stay . The rather basic La Posada (US$5-10) on the square is run by the owner of Hotel La Palma in La Palma and has basic but clean rooms with shared bathroom; there's also a TV room, and the lobby sells artesanias from Ilobasco, La Palma and San Ignacio. The upmarket Hotel Entre Pinos (tel 335 9370, fax 335 9382; US$60-80) is on the highway, just before the village. The large, very comfortable rooms have bathrooms with hot water and great views, plus a restaurant, pool, bar, conference facilities, hiking trails and horseback-riding. Just short of El Poy, a road branching to the left crosses the Rio Lempa and runs to the village of CITALA , 1km away. From here a daily bus leaves at 5am, running west along a rough but scenic mountain road to Metapan , for access to Bosque Montecristo and the Guatemalan border at Anguiatu, a journey of three to four hours. There's a basic posada (up to US$5) close to the centre of the village.

EL POY itself is a drab, dusty

village with a collection of small comedores and general stores. Crossing the border here is straightforward and quick; there is a US$2 entrance charge for Honduras, but no entry or exit charges for El Salvador. A lot of trucks use this route, but private traffic is light; crossing early in the day is advisable. The last bus from the border for La Palma and San Salvador leaves at 4.30pm. On the Honduran side buses run the 10km to Nueva Ocotepeque every forty minutes or so until 5pm.
