Parque Nacional Corcovado Practicalities

Practicalities

Unless you're coming to Corcovado with Costa Rica Expeditions and staying in their tent camp, in the dry season, at least, you have to reserve in advance - this will include meals, camping space or lodging at the puesto of your choice. The best way to do this is to fax the park's Puerto Jimenez office directly on 735-5276 or, if you're already in the country, visit the Fundacion de Parques Nacionales in San Jose, who will fax or telephone Corcovado on your behalf. You'll have to specify your dates and stick to them. It currently costs US$2 per night to camp at the puestos , or US$6 to sleep in the comfortable accommodation block at Sirena. You can either take meals with the rangers (US$3 for breakfast, US$6 for lunch and dinner - you pay in colones at the puesto ) or bring your own food and utensils and use their stove. Food is basic - rice and beans or fish - but filling.

You should bring your own tent, mosquito net, sleeping bag, food and water, and plan to hike early - though not before dawn, due to snakes - and shelter during the hottest part of the day. Corcovado is set up so

that the rangers at each puesto always know how many people are on a given trail, and how long they are expected to be. If you are late getting back, they'll go looking for you. This gives a measure of security, but, all the same, take precautions. Incidentally, it's especially important when coming to Corcovado to brush up on your Spanish . You'll be asking the rangers for a lot of crucial information, and few, if any, speak English. Bring a phrase book if you're not fluent.
