Rara Avis Activities
Rara Avis has a network of very good trails . From the Waterfall Lodge , nine or so trails weave through fairly dense jungle cover. All are well-marked, and give walks of thirty minutes to several hours depending upon the pace. While guided walks are fun and informative, guests are welcome to go it alone: you'll be given a map at the lodge receptions, but you should always let the staff know which trail you are following and about how long you intend to be. Rain gear is essential at all times. Just below the Waterfall Lodge , a fifty-metre-high waterfall on the Rio Atelopus plummets into a deep pool before continuing the river's slide down towards lower ground. Swimming in the icy-cold pool, shrouded in a fine mist, is a wonderful experience, but don't even consider it without a guide. Occasional cabezas de agua (flash floods) up in the highlands swell the river and cause sudden rushing torrents, with potentially fatal consequences - three people were swept to their deaths here some years ago.
