Moving On From Puerto Viejo De Sarapiqui
Puerto Viejo is a transport hub for the entire Zona Norte and eastern side of the country. From here it's possible to travel back to the Valle Central , either via the Guapiles Highway (1hr 30min or more) or via Varablanca and Heredia (3hr or more). You can also cut across country west to San Carlos (3hr) and on to Fortuna (3-4hr) and Volcan Arenal, from where it's easy to continue, via Tilaran, to Monteverde and Guanacaste . By river it's possible to continue north from Puerto Viejo along the Rio Sarapiqui to the Nicaraguan border then east along the Rio San Juan to Barra and Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast. You'll have to rent a private lancha to do this pleasant journey, which can take anywhere between four and seven hours (you're going upstream). It's fairly pricey, unless you're in a group of eight or so - about US$300 (8-10 maximum capacity). Ask at Souvenirs Rio Sarapiqui or at the docks.
