Practicalities
Less than an hour from San Jose, the aerial tram turn-off is on the northeast border of the Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, 5.3km beyond the (signed) bridge over the Rio Sucio, on the right-hand side; from the turn-off it's another 1.5km. To get there by bus , catch the Guapiles service and ask the driver to drop you at the entrance. The return Guapiles-San Jose bus will stop when flagged down, unless full. Wear a hat, insect repellent, and bring binoculars, camera and rain gear. Alternatively, and much more conveniently, you can organize a tour (US$65 per person) with the tram's San Jose office on C 7, Av 7 (tel 257-5961, fax 257-6053, www.rainforesttram.com ), which includes transport to and from your hotel, a guided aerial excursion and hiking on nature trails. Similar trips are offered (at a slightly higher price) by most San Jose travel agencies. There are also special early-morning birdwatching trips and torchlit night rides (until 9pm) - many canopy inhabitants only become active and visible in the dark - plus tours combining the tram with other regional attractions such as La Guacima Butterfly Farm or the Cafe Britt Finca.
