The invention of American naturalist Donald Perry, the Rainforest Aerial Tram lies just beyond the eastern boundary of Braulio Carrillo (5km east of Rio Sucio; Mon 9am-4pm, Tues-Sun 6am-4pm; US$50 per person). The product of many years' research, most of it carried out at nearby Rara Avis in the Zona Norte, the tram is the first of its kind in the world. Twenty overhead cable cars , each holding five passengers and one guide, run slowly along the 1.7km aerial track, skirting the tops of the forest and passing between trees, providing eye-level encounters along the way. The ride affords a rare glimpse of birds, animals and plants - including the epiphytes, orchids, insects and mosses that live inside the upper reaches of the forest - and, largely silent, it is less likely to frighten the animals. Don't come expecting to see particular animals, however, or you may be disappointed. Surrounding the tram track is a 3.5 square-kilometre private reserve used by researchers to study life in the rainforest canopy.
