Practicalities
Buses from Heredia to Paso Llano leave daily at 6.30am, noon and 4pm. Buses back from Paso Llano to Heredia leave at 7.30am, 1pm and (most conveniently, but on weekends only) 5pm. Otherwise you'll have to get a taxi - ask in either of the restaurants we've mentioned or try ringing local driver Lizandro Cascante (tel 224-2400). From Paso Llano it's a four-kilometre walk (there's no bus) to the hamlet of Sacramento, followed by another 3km up a steep track to the Barva puesto , If you want to stay near the volcano, there are basic huts (US$2 per night) and camping facilities (reserve in advance on 283-5906) at the Barva puesto . There are also a couple of surprisingly good places to stay in the hamlet of Guacalillo, 8km south of the volcano. Hotel de Montana El Portico (tel 237-6022, fax 260-6002) has enormous, simply furnished rooms with private bath (US$40-60) and attractive self-catering cabins (US$70 per night for up to 5 people), while the adjacent Hotel Las Ardillas (tel 260-2172, ardillas@racsa.co.cr ; US$40-60) has very pretty cabinas with wall hangings and fireplaces, and a wonderfully cosy restaurant. There's also a tiled spa with mud treatments, massage and hypnotherapy (US$20-50/hr). If you want to stock up on energy before climbing, several restaurants in the area serve tipico food, including the Campesino , about 3.5km beyond Paso Llano en route to Volcan Barva, and the Sacramento , another 500m further on. Soda El Bosque in Sacramento, a picturesque little cafe stuffed full of junk-shop objects collected by its owner, serves up traditional gallos with various toppings, as well as breakfast and casados .
