Heredia province stretches northeast from San Jose all the way to the Nicaraguan border, skirted on the west by Hwy-9, the old road from San Jose to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. To the east, the Guapiles Highway, Hwy-32, provides access to Braulio Carrillo and to Limon on the Atlantic coast. The moment you leave San Jose for Heredia , the provincial capital, the rubbery leaves of coffee plants spring up on all sides - the section of the province we've covered is almost wholly given over to coffee production, and there are a number of popular "coffee tours", especially to the Cafe Britt Finca near Heredia town. In the Valle Central, the province's chief attractions are dormant Volcan Barva , which offers a good day's climb, and the nearby Rainforest Aerial Tram , which allows you to see the canopy of primary rainforest from above, causing minimal disturbance to the animals and birds.
