Orchids are the main attraction at Lankaster Gardens (daily 8.30am-3.30pm; US$4), a tropical garden and research station 6km southeast of Cartago. While there are always some in bloom at any given time, the wet season (May-Nov) is less rewarding than the dry; March and April are the best months. To get to the gardens by bus from San Jose , take the Cartago service, get off at Las Ruinas, and change to a Paraiso bus. Get off when you see the Casa Vieja restaurant, about ten minutes out of town, and take the road off to your right, signposted to the gardens, then turn right again at the fork - a total walk of about 1km.
