Dominating the landscape around Cartago, mighty Volcan Irazu is the area's most popular excursion. On the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Central, the small town of Turrialba is something of a local hub for watersports, with Rios Reventazon and Pacuare, two of the best whitewater rafting rivers in the country, nearby. Turrialba has also become a small centre for river kayaking - whitewater kayaking, in effect - with one or two specialist tour operators. The town is also the gateway to the Monumento Nacional Guayabo , the most important archeological site in Costa Rica.
